Andrew "Ender" Wiggin er kun seks år gammel, da han bliver udpeget som dette geni, der måske er den menneskelige races eneste håb. Sammen med andre udvalgte højtbegavede børn kommer Ender i træning på Kampskolen, der svæver i kredsløb om jorden. Her udsættes han for en træning, der er så intens både fysisk og psykisk, at mange af børnene bryder sammen.
